PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Midway is an architectural degree project that envisions the reuse of a WWII era aircraft carrier as the framework and site for the new San Diego Main Public Library, City Community Meeting and Recreation Center, and Community Gardens and Orchard. The surplus of military equipment too old for active service but still holding great value in a revised civil role is continually growing. This project imagines the re-use of the largest example of this surplus the USS Midway. It explores the architectural qualities inherent in the highly evolved design of a modern naval warship merged with the deconstruction and spatial rehabilitation necessary to create useful light-filled civic spaces. |
