PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The Harris Library is a community library dedicated to the art of suspense writing and the work of Thomas Harris, the writer of the Hannibal Lecter Trilogy. Located alongside the train tracks in Solana Beach, CA the library is submerged deep into the site to allow the visitor to descend through the collected works and exhibits. Its design attempts to use architectural tools to give the visitor opportunities for anticipation, exhilaration, isolation, and human interaction. Reading rooms which look out at the eye level of train passengers passing by offer the opportunity for two people removed from one another to suspend time and connect for a brief moment. Spaces deep underground are lit by light wells from above and large windows open to a sunken garden. These areas blur the line between inside and out, above and below. Ramps criss-cross through the main space suspended from a steel structure above. High above the main floor of the library they can look down on others below and be seen by others from above. |
